"I want to eat the pilot" said Fernando Parrado to his friend Ricardo Cannesa, after the chocolates that they have been eating since they crashed was exhausted.
Cannibalism? Or just human survival instinct kicking in?
Parrado and Cannesa, survived on eating the flesh of their dead friends. If they didn't, then one of the most inspiring survival stories of our time would never had been told.
The Andes plane crash as it become popularly known, where 16 out of 45 survived after 72 days in the harsh sub-zero temperatures of the rugged Andes mountains, is a story of the unyielding human spirit. A story worth telling. A story worth listening. A story worth reading.
Two books have been written, the first by Piers Paul Read in 1974 titled Alive: The Story of the Andes Survivors. In 2006, 34 years after he was rescued Fernando Parrado together with Vince Rause published the book Miracle in the Andes: 72 Days on the Mountain and My Long Trek Home.
